Console upgrade

First of all: YES, I've read ALL the topics/sticky about upgrading an embedded version, so I know I should reflash the CF card.
Given that, the embedded version has the "option 13" to update via console, and I created and flashed a 1Gb image.
I would just like to know how to create a tgz to give to the updater, since the links in the guide point to nowhere.
No more embedded update files available. Is there a way to create them from the embedded-install image?
I think pfSense is a killer product, but having to physically open the device, unplug the flash, reflash, reassemble and reconfigure simply makes it no suitable for businesses.
