So, in order to upgrade our appliance, I need to fix NanoBSD? What is the best option? To follow the procedure in:
      https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Upgrading_64-bit_NanoBSD_2.3_to_2.4

or to backup settings, do a complete fresh install and restore settings?

      What is easiest/best/safest?

IMO, the easiest and safest way to do this is to backup the config, do a fresh install, and restore.

OK. This is an appliance, VK-T 40 E2. So I guess I just have to follow this:
          https://www.netgate.com/docs/pfsense/vk-t40e/reinstall-pfsense.html

And dig out a serial cable.

That's just an APU1, right? I'd recommend putting an msata in it, and doing a full install.
