      pfsense: 1.01
      squid: 2.6.18.1_07

Starting squid gives the following error:

Too few dnsserver processes are running
FATAL: The dnsserver helpers are crashing too rapidly, need help!

Running dnsserver on its own gives the following error:

      /usr/local/libexec/squid/dnsserver

      /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/local/libexec/squid/dnsserver: Undefined symbol "__res_state"

No amount of reinstalling has helped. This appears to be a mismatch between the package and the elf library … Any chance of getting another ( earlier ) package?

      Regards, Robby

I assume I need to got to 1.2 first but there doesn't seem to be any older update/iso packages on the pfsense download mirrors.

At this point your device is ridiculously out of date.  I would encourage you to do a complete re-installation and follow updates from now on.  1.2 was released over a year ago, and 1.2.2 has been out for over a month.  There is absolutely no reason, whatsoever for you to still be running 1.0.1.

Thanks - is there any way to upgrade rather than reinstall?

You can try a firmware upgrade, although given how out of date your system is, I wouldn't hold out much hope for it.  Expect to have to re-install.
