I have had my pfSense router working flawlessly for over 60 days now running 2.3.3.

I tried to upgrade on several occasions to 2.4.x, and all attempts have been a bust due to issues with my Broadcom 10Gb NIC.

The device is detected and active, but it refuses to detect a link of any kind, even though 2.3.3 could detect it without a problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

      Current Hardware

      Dell Poweredge R210 II
      BIOS 1.10.0
NIC: BCM957810A1006G (Broadcom 10GB PCI-E Dual SFP+ Port NIC Adapter Card)
      Driver: BCM57810
      Last Known Running Package: 2.3.3
      Attempting to upgrade to 2.4.3

How are you seeing the lack of link?

It certainly seems to be reporting a connection of some sort.

        Apr 1 22:07:14	kernel bxe0: Found 10Gb Fiber media.

Do you see link LEDs on the card itself?

It looks like bxe0 is being put in promiscuous mode but bxe1 is not. How are those interfaces configured?

Lack of link comes from inability to establish communications with upstream equipment. With 2.3.3, an IP address is assigned by DHCP almost instantly. I have those same settings when I upgrade to 2.4.2, and it refuses to get an IP anytime.

The LEDs on the card are all off.

The device is configured as such:

          BXE0: Unconfigured Port
BXE1: Assigned WAN. IP Assigned by DHCP
          BCE0: Unconfigured Port
BCE1: Assigned LAN. Hosts DHCP for local network.

You see the same thing on both bxe NICs?

Ah you running them in a lagg? Your last reply suggests not but there are reports of regression with bxe and lagg in FreeBSD 11.

It has never been associated with any LAGGs, and I appear to get similar log entries on both versions on pfSense

Are you able to test a FreeBSD 11 or FreeBSD 12 install? There may be driver updates there. If you can test FreeBSD 11.1 and it works there we can look at what differences there are.

                Steve

Installed and attempted to connect to networks

                  FreeBSD 11.1 (Version for 2.4.x)
BXE0: No Link (No media attached) - DHCPDISCOVER still sent.
BXE1: No Link (Optical SFP Connected) - DHCPDISCOVER never sent - FreeBSD Gave up "No Link…................Giving Up"
BCE0: No Link (No media attached) - DHCPDISCOVER still sent
BCE1: Link found - No DHCP server - DHCPDISCOVER sent

                  FreeBSD10.3 (Version for 2.3.x)
BXE0: No Link - (No media attached) - DHCPDISCOVER still sent.
BXE1: Link Found - (Optical SFP Connected) - DHCP retrieved during install
BCE0: No Link - (No Madia Attached) - DHCPDISCOVER still sent.
BCE1: Link Found - No DHCP Server - DHCPDISCOVER sent.

FreeBSD doesnt seem to have a hard time discovering the NIC and everything about it, but simply doesnt want to use it.

When I try 12.0, when setting up the network during install, I select BXE1 and this text appears down at the bottom with no link found.

lock order reversal: (sleepable after non-sleepable)
                   1st 0xfffffffff81d42e78 in_multi-mtx (in_multi_mtx) @ /usr/src/sys/netinet/in_mcast.c:1143
                   2nd 0xfffffe001bad4020 bxe_core_lock (bxe1_core_lock) @ /usr/src/sys/dev/bxe/bxe.c:4575

Attached is the picture of me using dhclient after install.

Hmm, so there appears to be a regression in the BXE driver in FreeBSD 11.1 that is resolved in 12 if I'm reading that right?

You might try a different 11 image. 11 stable maybe, perhaps that has the fix if it is known.

There's not a huge amount we can do about it in pfSense though.

                    Steve

The driver was never fixed by switching to 12. While it showed more errors, I still had no use of my NIC while on any newer platform. Ill see about bringing this up to the devs over with FreeBSD though to see what all they have to say.

                      Thanks for your help!
