      Sorry for opening another topic,
have read allot of topics but some are "outdated" already.
Since their are so many i am not sure what system is "best".

I am looking to buy or build 2 systems , 1 for at home and 1 for a house my dad is renting out.
Coming from a Sonicwall NSA240 , that gave me all kinds of limitations because of the very expensive licenses that have to be paid yearly, that is if they still can be used or bought since it has become a EOL product.

The system would be for myself, and i have an idea but why invent the wheel again is what came in mind since so many users already have the experience which hardware is good to go.
What i am trying to achieve is get a system that is fast enough to handle Gigabit Wan and a decent VPN speed. ( wan speed now is still 280/48Mbit )
But with the lowest energy consumption or should i say reasonable.

Is this actually possible or is it better to go with a pfsense supported hardware that is on their webshop available.
I also read about that we should have AES supported hardware since this is the newer standard.

What is wise, build yourself with certain parts,  or a ready to go box?
Since i live in the Netherlands a ready to go box is more expensive because of import taxes and shipping, it all depends on the total costs what is cheaper and still good to work with.

If someone has good experience with certain hardware, please link me to it and it would be very appreciated.

      Thanks in advance

      Vince

Search the boards for J3355B. It's a SoC with 10W TDP. Can handle Gigabit WAN easily and about 300 Mbps in VPN according to reports. I built my system based on J3355B in $103. You could do it under $100 too if you search for used parts hard enough.

My WAN speed is only 50Mbps down so for me it should work great. As long as you don't expect a higher throughput than 300Mbps over VPN, it should work for you too.

          Thanks allot,  this helps.
I was already thinking of much more expensive hardware then this and the 10W is even better.

VPN speed is more then sufficient  ::)

          Thanks again.

Edit:  think im going for this board.

Seems to have a pciex 16x slot also.
Most intel dual gbit nic cards are X4.
          should work in there.

Of course is possible. Electronics get more efficient all the time. I just replaced a 100Tx switch drawing 10 watts with a Gigabit switch drawing 3 watts.  10x more pleasure at 1/4 the cost! :)
