WOL active and reboot after halt

  • My backup pfSense box running the following motherboard ECS H61H2-M2, seems to behave erratically when I enable WOL, specifically if enabled then when I halt the pfSense box it immediately reboots. I'd like to have a working WOL setup (without the reboots after halting) so I can script a makeshift failover strategy.

    The mobo specs:

Latest BIOS flashed and "Resume By PCI/PCI-E/Lan PME" [Enabled] in the BIOS. I've tried with both the onboard realtek NIC and a PCIe intel nic, same behavior.

I realize that this is probably due to how WOL is implemented at the hardware level and willing to give up but just thought if others experienced similar or if there's anything that could be done on the pfSense side of things (which I doubt).

    Thanks

Indeed, it probably is due to the required power state for WoL not being correctly supported by the board.

Are you running the latest BIOS?

You might  try shutting down from the CLI with shutdown -h vs shutdown -p. Does the console report it's rebooting?

There may be some BIOS additional ACPI power state setting in the BIOS required.

Yeah at the latest BIOS, unfortunately that dates back to 2013…

Perhaps, I'm doing it wrong but I've been testing halting the system from the command line with /etc/rc.halt, I'll try what you suggest.

Also, not sure about other BIOS settings, the manufacturer says all that's needed is the following:
