hijacking the thread ??

  • This this thread I was accused of hijacking the thread:
    http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,13938.new/topicseen.html

    newly splitted thread:
    http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,13979.msg74316.html

We have the same symptoms. The subject line of a new thread would be the same. People search the fourm based on symptoms, not problems. Other communities would be put off  by many similar threads. What is wrong with keeping all the solutions to the same systems in the same thread. It will make it easier for the next guy to find a thread that has the needed answers.

Jorge's problem has been resolved. There is no hijacking. This is a matter of how we should organize the data. Out of all the forums i have participated in I have never been accused of this. I am more than willing to believe Jimp and that at pfsense, many small threads with single solutions rather than deeper comprehensive threads. But I want second opinions. What do you think?

  • Your problem description is not really connected to the original thread.

Jimp was right in telling you that you would more likely get a response by creating a new thread with way more details to your problem.
aka. your problem description is not helping anyone trying to help you, since you're not telling what your goal is, from where to where you're connecting, ssh-client, etc.
(as in everything someone needs to know to help troubleshoot) :)

Generally i split followup questions to resolved problems into a new thread.
    (If i see it).

If you're concerned about "similar problem into the same thread" you could create a new thread and link the thread you think is connected.

  • thank you for the direction

your problem description is not helping anyone trying to help you, since you're not telling what your goal is, from where to where you're connecting, ssh-client, etc.

isnt the goal clear? file transfer… the clients im attempting to use is scp and the kde kio fish. i stated that im using pfsense version 1.2.1.... provided the scp error message, what else can i provide?

    Hijacking:
was i taking the thread in a "radical departure from the topic of the thread"? did my post interfere with the original poster getting his/her problem solved? was the post expired by x days/weeks/months of inactivity?

image the next guy with this trouble. searching the forums with key words with her symptoms. i would personally prefer to have the potential solutions for the same systems organized in fewer threads, rather than have a bunch of threads "1.2.x cant scp"  or "problem trying to scp" etc....

i will follow what the community wants, but these seems different than all the other forums that i participate it (im not a heavy lefter by any means). i wonder if there tends to be generalized differences a crossed broader communities, such as BSD/Linux....?

summery, i dont agree, but i appreciate and i will respect the direction.

    dutler,

Sorry you took it that way. I wasn't trying to be rude or accusing you of violating a policy. My goal was to help you get a better response.

Most of the forums I frequent are "one subject/problem per thread", and sometimes they will even close/lock threads after a single problem is solved.

Even if your problem is similar, it isn't identical. The two solutions might be documented nearby each other on a Wiki or FAQ, but could easily get lost in a single large forum thread.

I'd rather search and find an error in its own thread, rather than on page 5 of some big thread with a general topic. :)

And instead of going around and around about what you should or shouldn't have done, your problem may have been solved by now if. :)

  • Hello jimp:
i wasnt offended. I just dont agree that it was hijacking and laid out the reasons why above. I would have just ignored the accusation, but I want to understand how things work here.

And instead of going around and around about what you should or shouldn't have done, your problem may have been solved by now if.

I think learning the proper etiquette on these forums is prob more important to me than the scp issue…. and there is the split thread out there. In the future at pfsense.org, will be quicker to start a new thread.

i completely agree with you on the 5+ page threads...... I think it is same as most things and that a balance is needed. The split and hijacking sensitivity was not on balance to me, but it more important that it is on balance with this community (and that I understand the balance).

  • isnt the goal clear? file transfer… the clients im attempting to use is scp and the kde kio fish. i stated that im using pfsense version 1.2.1.... provided the scp error message, what else can i provide?

I mean more the general goal.
Why are you trying to scp in the first place.
If you provide the whole picture (is it to upload files for the captive portal?) then someone could give you a different solution to your problem (use the filemanager).

  • ic, too solicit a work around along with a fix, say why your are doing, not just what. i actually used the file editor on this time around, but still hoping to figure out what is wrong….
