I lost my putty access (from the lan side) I get protocol violation: unexpected SSH2_msg_unimplemented packet

      Any idea what I did?

Old putty version? Did you just upgrade pfSense?

Well, I assume it is after I turned snort on and had it mess everything up so I thought I had cleared everything it added.
          I'm using extraputty 0.29_RC2

If you had enabled blocking in Snort at all you might still have hosts in the Snort blocked table. Though that would normally affect everything from that host not just SSH.

I have tried to go back and uncheck everything then turn snort back off. Is there a simple option to reset the firewall back to default?

There is a factory default option at the console or via the webgui in the Diagniostics menu.
