      Various "WRT" implementations are often used on inexpensive consumer routers. Is there anything similar for pfSense? It seems to me, it would be better doing that, than installing on a regular computer.

      i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.

        Most of those have so little RAM/CPU/etc that they could not effectively run pfSense. And most of them are not 64-bit x86 hardware, but various ARM platforms for example.
