Not sure where to post this but I've performed 3 upgrades from 2.4.3 to 2.4.4 that have produced what appears to be essentially the same error. The systems appear to work fine but I thought passing this on would be useful. The only issue I have is that after tthe reboot (once the upgrade is complete) the console just shows:

      Upgrading necessary packages...

At this point I've waited an hour and am still waiting. I don't know if it is actually doing anything or not. Judging by the previous 2 installs, if I reboot again then everything should be fine but I can't do anything from the console until I reboot.

      Hardware: PC Engines APU2C4
      Packages:
      Cron sysutils 0.3.7_2
      iftop net-mgmt 0.17_2

      mailreport mail 3.1
      nmap security 1.4.4_1
      Notes sysutils 0.2.9_2
      pfBlockerNG net 2.1.2_3
      RRD_Summary sysutils 2.0
      Service_Watchdog sysutils 1.8.4
      Shellcmd sysutils 1.0.3

Apparently when I try to post what's on the console the post gets locked as Spam by Akismet. The last thing I see is "Upgrading necessary packages..." and it just appears to sit and not move forward but if I reboot it seems fine.

As mentioned in the release announcement and upgrade guide, it's normal to see PHP errors during the update process when moving to 2.4.4.

It's only if the errors continue to happen after the upgrade that they are worth worrying about. And in most of those cases, it's a package like pfBlockerNG-devel that needs uninstalled and reinstalled.

There was also a problem in some cases on 2.4.3 and before where the GUI update process would lose track of the upgrade output. It should be better from here on, but you can run the upgrade from the console or ssh to make sure you see everything.

I had seen those errors with pfBlocker and noticed mentions about php errors in other spots. I just thought feedback would be useful but didn't know how to do it or where to submit the report. I thought there was a spot on the notice to upload to devs but I must be misremembering.

My actual concern is that the command line is showing that it is still processing packages but appears hung. Also during that time I can't update the packages manually. It just asks me to wait for the update system to initialize. I ran the first upgrade from the command line and it hung at this same spot (I only watched the console, not the GUI) but after a reboot it cleared up and continued. The second 2 I'm doing from the GUI and am still waiting. I can reboot and continue but I don't want to break something mid-install. How long is long enough to wait? 5 minutes? 15 minutes?

I haven't heard of anything getting stuck like that. It's possible a package you have has a lot of data (e.g. squid cache) and it really was taking that long to do what it needed to do. It's best to let it go, when you can.

If you are on the console when it appears to be stuck, you can press ctrl-t and the console will print what the active process/state is.

Very interesting. Didn't know that. This is the output:

So it's reading from a pipe of some kind. Though the exact specifics of what are tougher to find out. It may be waiting on some other task or job to complete before one of the pkg de/install scripts can complete.

I'd look at each site that is affected and see what packages they have in common. Odds are, it's one of those. And you might consider uninstalling the packages before running the upgrade on the next device to see how it goes.

Hmmm. Even after reboot if I try to update/install/uninstall packages I just get:

Please wait while the update system initializes

                    EDIT:

And when I try from the command line:

Gave it another hour and it still hadn't finished. Tried to run a reboot but it hung after stopping icap. Forced a reboot and everything looks updated now.

Just hopped on the second box I'm upgrading, hung at the same spot. Ctrl+t gives:

                        load: 0.73 cmd: sh 66890 [fifoow] 11850.05r 0.00u 0.00s 0% 2816k

Maybe that means something to you?

                          https://wiki.freebsd.org/WaitChannels

Waiting in a blocking write-only open of a FIFO (O_WRONLY) for another process to open a readable descriptor on this FIFO (O_RDWR or O_RDONLY)

So again it's stuck waiting on some process to finish up before it can proceed. If you can still ssh to the box you could check the ps uxawwd output and see what is running.

So it's stuck waiting on squidGuard's post-install script to finish, whatever it's doing.

This is definitely a situation where you should uninstall all the packages before attempting the upgrade. Something in there is stopping it, but it's difficult to say what exactly at that point.

Well, reboots seem to get it past the problem so it isn't that huge of a deal. Do the packages need to be uninstalled/reinstalled or just disabled?

Rebooting it is probably breaking something, though. The package reinstall didn't complete, so who knows which packages are OK and which need reinstalled yet. I'd remove and then install all of the packages again for good measure.
