Had a power cut and pfSense (on a UFS install) corrupted itself ending up in a boot loop.

Running fsck didn't fix it, so with an xml backup handy I did a clean install (ZFS this time).

The thing that mystifies me is that the new install seems to have automatically picked up the previous config and packages despite trashing the old UFS partition.

      How did pfSense do this?
Is it something to do with the new auto config backup?

Did you choose the "recover config.xml" option in the installer? That's what it will do.

It wouldn't have done that by default, though, you'd have to have picked that option.
