      Is it possible to copy the installed pfsense hd on a vm to an external hd? I'm trying through the dd command, but I can not reference the hd location or external hd

        Not easily and honestly you don't want to. It's a waste of time. Get a backup of config.xml, reinstall to the new drive, then restore the backup.

          If it's on a VM the drive is just a file anyway. You can just copy it off the host. Or snapshot the VM.
