      hi guys,

I've been running 2.4.4 for a while now, however i upgraded my internet and enbaled IPv6...

I have multiple sudden WAN disconnections and the box doesnt reconnect at all...my PPPoE showed [wan] IFACE: Removing IPv4 address from pppoe0 failed(IGNORING for now. This should be only for PPPoE friendly!): Can't assign requested address

i thouhgt its the realtek driver so i loaded a new one in boot .. i got the compiled one from:

      https://forum.netgate.com/topic/135850/official-realtek-driver-binary-1-95-for-2-4-4-release/17

after that, my second LAN interface which is supposidly a 1Gbps inteface barely runs on 10 mbps..

I havent had disconnections in my wan yet, but this LAN speed thing damaged everything....

      any ideas?

        to add:

        1. first problem was WAN disconnecting suddenly and not reconecting...

        2. installed a new realtek comiled driver (loaded on boot), then all my LAN speeds drop less than 10 mbps.. sometimes <1 mbps..

what changed in my env.. i got faster internet Up to 1 gbps, and enabled IPv6..

Don't buy crappy hardware. There are a lot of warnings against using Realtek NICs for pfSense, if you ignore them and buy this crap you can't be helped.

Get Intel or at least Broadcom NICs if you want a stable pfSense experience.

            Hey Grimson,

This box has been running for 4 years.. loaded with snort, Squidd and many other packages... all good, did not really witness ireegular behavior like this.. actually after 2.4.4 , i started having many issues..

            cheers

It's your faster internet access, it simply overtaxes the Realtek crap. Those NICs can barely handle 500 to 600 Mbit/s and often crap out once you go beyond that.

Like I said, if you insist on using Realtek NICs for pfSense you can't be helped.

Edit: A little visual presentation to show what you are attempting to do.

              Your trying to move this:

                Thanks Grimson,

I think you may be right, coz this never happened on slower connection(s)... i will change my box.. i hope i can find something affordable..

                cheers

1Gbps over PPPoE is also likely to hit a CPU limit in many cases as it only uses one CPU core. What CPU do you have?

Hi Stephenw, bandwidth isnt reaching 1 Gbps all the time.. actually its barely reaching 300 Mbps...

CPU is Atom 4 cores and i have 4 Gigs of RAM...It definately not a resrouce issue, i've been watching the resources for a while... looks normal..

There is something very strage when you get IPv6 working as well... if i change any of the interfaces, what ever the change is, the WAN drops immediatly and i have to connect it manually...

yesterday i reinstalled 2.4.4 from scratch... i still dont see any difference..

                    cheers

                      Which Atom specifically?

You should check the loading across the cores using top -aSH at the command line.

If it's an older Atom it would not surprise me at all to see it using 100% on one core.

                      Steve

Looks like either you were not transferring and data when that was grabbed or the top secret Atom CPU you're running is some overclocked beast. 😉

I suspect the former. Please run a speedtest of similar and grab the output when that is maxed out.

Ok, with Intel NICs I would expect that CPU to get somewhere around 800Mbps but it wouldn't do Gigabit line rate even in idealised conditions. However it's not CPU restricting that, all the cores still have idle cycles. I assume that's an internal transfer not over the PPPoE?

                              Steve

Well, no its over PPPoE which is my internet link... i dont seem to see high CPU usage or lets put it like this, i dont see critical CPU usage..

Snort and squid are runnign and are reasonoably consuming CPU and memory..

My point is to validate that i need more CPU and different NICs (Intel instead of the Realtek)...

                                1. why the WAN link drops? --- it did not yet since i did the fresh 2.4.4 install.. and why doesnt it reconnect.. will have to wait to see..

                                2. like for IPv6, why does my LAN get the ipv6 address and not my pppoe connection inteface..my lan ipv6 configuration is tracked and i get ipv6 for it.. but not my pppoe, which only shows the fe80 address..

                                3. regarding the speed of the internet, as you said, maybe intel would goto 800, but 400 for realtek, which is not a beggi if the realteks aint causing the drop of the wan..

                                4. one funny thing in 2.4.4 or with ipv6, when i edit any interface or add a new one or do any changes on any interface.. the WAN drops immediatly.. i have to manually connect again..pretty much this is a bug..

                                thanks for your help Steve

Hmm, 500Mbps over PPPoE on that CPU is pretty good. I expect it to show more usage to be honest, I expect one core to be at 100%. Have you been able to check the connection directly and prove it's possible to get more than that?

Some ISP only give you a PD not an IP on the interface or v6, mine does. Some allow you to request either or both. in the DHCPv6 setup. I assume you were seeing both previously?

Not sure about the disconnects. There are a number of threads reporting similar issues in 2.4.4 but nothing definitive. And it clearly isn't affecting most PPPoE users. I have seen no issues on both my PPPoE WANs here for example.

                                  Steve

If you're still seeing that error with the driver from Realtek and you're sure it is loading there's not much you can do other than replacing the NIC.
Check the boot log for the driver version to be sure.

This was a rebuild... no new drivers used...

I am having suspisions about the unbound server and DNSBL in PFBlocker...

Just had another drop now and i have disabled them to see if it makes any difference...

                                        cheers

So you stopped using the driver from Realtek you linked in your first post?

If so you're hitting the watchdog error that is known to help with.

                                          Steve
