Hypervisor Recommendation For Linux VM's

Hi all,
I'm putting together a system with the intent to run a 3 - 4 Linux virtual machines (at this point I'm I'm planning for all the VM's to run Debian Linux) . The system will have a quad core Intel i3 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel i340 4 port gigabit network adapter. Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of experience yet setting up a system with virtual machines, so I wanted to poll the community and ask what guys might recommend for the hypervisor. Since I'm planning on running Debian, would Xen be the best option for me? Or, would VMWare be better? Thanks in advance for your help.

I tried Proxmox a short while ago, I was using RedHat's VM system, and now all my VM's are now in Proxmox.

Thanks @chrismacmahon - I just checked out Proxmox and it looks like it could work out quite nicely. I have one quick follow up question (and I apologize if this is a dumb question): Once a VM has been created and the OS configured, does Proxmox allow one to save snapshots (or images) of that VM so that if something ever goes wrong, it's as simple as spinning up a new VM from that snapshot/image? Thanks again.

Yes, That feature has helped me a few times with a few VM's.

I would use VMware ESXi. It's free and best of class.
