@voltaic Also forgot to mention that the BIOS password posted here some time ago ... it works with the M470 units.

Yeah, I went throught the thread already so BIOS password isn't an issue. I've already dd dumped the existing OS off the 16GB mSATA drive and test installed pfSense on it. It's all working as expected. I'm waiting for my bigger mSATA drive to arrive tomorrow and will reinstall pfSense on it and bring over my config from my J4125 mini-PC/router. Next will be CPU and RAM upgrade before going in my rack.

So today I got my Xeon E3-1260Lv5 processor and the unit doesn't POST. I don't know how loud the buzzer is on the motherboard if/when POST error occurs, but it sounds like it's a continuous faint beep beep beep... I tried clearing the CMOS via jumper and battery to no avail.

Putting back the original CPU works fine. I only have one stick of RAM (the original one), so I don' tknow if the CPU expects 2 stick. I should be getting my 16Gb sticks next week so I'll re-test when I get those.

Just curious if anyone else experienced this sort of behavior. Again, my BIOS is dated 2017.

            Thanks in advanced.

Mmm I think the M370 actually has a different chipset than the M4/5/670. There were a few posts earlier in the thread about it not booting Xeon CPUs. 😕

The unit I'm refering to is a M470 with the C236 chipset.

Oh. Hmm, I'd expect it to work. Is the CPU known good? Can you test it in something else?

It's an eBay-sourced CPU so yeah, we never know! Pretty sure most of my boards are LGA1150 or older... 'cept maybe the system I used in my arcade cabinet. I'll check tonight.

Just a quick update... I tried the E3-1260Lv5 in a Q370-based motherboard. It too didn't POST so I'll mark this as a bad CPU. Thankfully I purposely didn't shell out a lot of $ for it (18USD). Eventually, I'll try to source the same CPU from a more reliable source (i.e. from someone in NA, not China).

Has anyone tried to get the PCI-E port working on the M370? I have a custom F2F cable made up, and a X520 attached but its not being detected in esxi at all. The card itself lights up and flashes with DAC connected but that it.

lspci doesnt show anything but testing the card in a HPE server works fine with the DAC so I know its compatible any ideas?

A cable you made yourself? I can't see why it wouldn't work there, but the case doesn't have the fixings for a slot and the board is different to that used in the 470/570/670. So potentially it could be missing components.

@tapnet boot into a Linux Live USB, open Terminal and type lspci see If the card shows up. ESXi removes support.

Its a factory made cable, but to add to this I have tried a M2 to PCI-E card and that didnt work either so they must've nerf'd the bios theres no options either to change PCI settings I guess thats to prevent people adding cards from M720/M670 etc to lower end models.

                              Shame.

Hmm, seems like an odd choice given it won't fit in the case. And they would likely need a custom bios to to do it.

Hi All, Just want to report back that my M470 successfully booted with the 2017 BIOS using a more reliably sourced E3-1260Lv5. So careful where you get your cheap CPUs from. :)

I recently picked up two M470s relatively cheap on eBay and installing pfSense was a breeze. I wanted 10Gb networking, and rather than jerry-rig my own solution, I picked up a Lanner module branded as the LANDITEC NCS2-IXM204 and it worked without any issues. Only downside to it is it isn't Watchguard red, lol. They're nice little boxes.
