Appears to be a DNS problem.
I tried off the pfsense network i.e. from my mobile.
dnslookup.org can find the server
8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 can not find the server -
Read the sticky posts so you don't look too stupid: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/115789/pkg-pfsense-org-appears-to-be-dead/2

@grimson try reading my post, so you don't look stupid.
i have run an nslookup from vodafone mobile network in DE, and from our corporate network in the UK. All have nothing to do with my home network (with pfsense).
on the vf network, i have tried with different DNS server settings.
pfsense.org is propogated on all DNSservers, but pkg.pfsense.org is only available via the website nslookup.org -

Again, read the post I linked. You can't resolve pkg.pfsense.org with nslookup because it doesn't have A/AAAA records. Congratulations on looking mighty stupid.

yes. that is because the host is pkg.pfsense.org.sugar.com 205.178.189.131
the host traceroutes from the pfsense host and from clients on the lan...Seems it does not work over the VPN.
Once the gateway is switched to the WAN, it works with the same rule set, only the gateway changed.
if the gateway is a gateway group, it doesn't work at all.
if the gateway is a single vpn, it times out when trying to installso smarty, why is it unable to retrieve packages
