Intermittent Packet Loss and High Ping
-
Hi everyone,
I've been using Pfsense successfully with no issue for a couple years now, but have recently ran into an odd issue that I am having no luck figuring out. Normally my connection is fine with a low ping (17ms) and the speeds that I am supposed to get (50/10) but recently there has been intermittent, but very common (happens majority of time) periods of high ping (400-1500ms) and very low speeds along with ~10% packet loss. This definitely is not on the isp side as I have connected a computer direct to my modem (Dsl in bridged) and no problem occurs.
I couldn't figure it out so I tried using a completely new pfsense installation, but the problem is still occuring. I am using pfsense in an esxi vm. One pattern I've noticed is that on reboot the ping stays at what it should be for ~30sec-1min
Thanks guys! -
Begrudgingly, I set my wifi AP up in router mode with the same exact connections as my esxi server and it seems to work just fine. So it is definitely some kind of issue with pfsense itself or possibly esxi?

Turns out it wasn't even a routing issue after all. I had a switch that was running in my patch panel that when connected to the network causes the packet loss, very odd. No idea why the new router fixed it temporarily. Guess I'll set pfsense back up.
