Just that, I found that my WAN connection drops when processor utilization rises. My question is: Is there any advise to optimize processor utilization?

My config: Plain, no packages are running, no more than 5 F/W rules in effect, logs disabled, dual WAN setup (one LB pool+one Failover pool).
My Hardware: P4, 512 MB RAM Realtek Network cards.

Are you sure that it's not the other way around?
Couldn't it be, that when your WAN for undetermined reasons drops, pfSense tries to get it back up.

What does the systemlog say around this time?

We do what we must, because we can.

What else is happening on this box at the time?  What kind of bandwidth usage do you have going on?  How about firewall states?
