      Maybe relevant background:

On the lan side, I have a ubiquiti access point with 2 wifi networks and each wifi network is tagged with a different vlan

      Public/Guest wifi: VLAN2
      Staff wifi: VLAN3

I've then set up the interfaces for the vlans

      What I'd like to do:

      • have devices on VLAN3 (and the vlan3 interface) get their dhcp address from a dhcp server on the wan side
      • have pfSense be the dhcp server for vlan2
      • for the devices on the lan interface (access point), pfsense can be the dhcp server, or let them get the address from the dhcp server on the wan side whichever is easier

You can either activate the DHCP Relay (to forward requests to another DCHP server) or the DHCP server on pfSense, not both at the same time.

Why want you use the pfSense DHCP server on all your interfaces?

vlan 2 is for public/guest devices
vlan3 is for wireless staff devices which I really wanted to be indistinguishable from wired staff devices. However, I bit the bullet and used pfsense as the dhcp for both vlans and so far haven't had any issues.

          Thanks for your answer.
