What a day today has been, and what a week. Today we have the first images of a black hole.
Then Falcon Heavy is going up tonight on its first commercial mission, with all three booster stages set to land back on Earth. Tentative launch window begins at 8:00pm EDT.

Then tomorrow the Israeli Beresheet lunar lander will make an attempt to touch down on the Moon. Touchdown at approx 3:00-4:00pm EDT.

What a time to be alive! Too bad Prof. Hawking wasn't still with us to see the black hole.

For any Californians out there the Launch Alert newsletter is a great way to stay up to speed on upcoming launches from the west coast...

I am a paid subscriber at Spaceflight Now. They are a fantastic resource and provide a lot more detail and photos than any other space site I've seen. They even have a live cam for subscribers trained on the launchpad.

Too bad Falcon Heavy was scrubbed last night, but we can enjoy the Beresheet lunar lander touching down this afternoon, and Falcon Heavy trying again this evening.
With all the live feeds of rockets, it's like a Golden Age for rocketry buffs. Too bad the Chinese and Iranians still hide their launches.

Disaster for Beresheet. Problems with an inertial sensor and their main engine caused the lander to slam into the Moon at high velocity. It's gone.

No ^^
More like having thison every screen I own.

Nice. I use the Space Launch Now Android app on my phone for launch tracking. I had no idea SpaceIL had their own app. Or was that just a generic timer app you were running?

Saw that ?!!
The 3 boosters landed .... -
It was glorious.

I don't think this will ever get old to watch:

The English spooks-men (women) was just about to explain that they (the Israeli) choose not to double any equipment at all. So if one thing goes down - or one software bug, then it would be a game over.
60 seconds later : lost contact ...But, true : they have landed a device on the moon ^^
-
That decision was purposely made to lower the cost of the mission. There was literally no redundancy. The whole thing was done on a shoestring budget, as far as space missions go.

I was watching the attempted landing - sucks it didn't work... But hope they try again.. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way on the live feed was the chat... WOW the internet is full of idiots and haters.. The chat was full of flat earthers and religious nuts and haters.. None of which had any place on such a feed.. But it was nice to see a lot of well wishers from all over the globe hoping for their success as well.

True - just very HARD landing ;)
There was people on the chat stating they hoped it failed?? What is wrong with people??
