As I understand it, you need two Ethernet interfaces to install pfSense. However, if I install the FreeSwitch package and then turn off the firewall functionality, can I remove one of the interfaces, which in my case is a PC Card Ethernet?

To find out if that is possible on 1.2.x you will need to try it on a test machine.

However pfSense 2.0 can run with one ethernet interface that is configured during the install. I tested pfSense 2.0 from a build in the last day or two and FreeSWITCH will install through the package manager now.

With only one physical ethernet interface you could at least use VLANs if you happen to have a VLAN capable switch.

Or assign the WAN to the NIC directly and the LAN as a (unused) VLAN on the same interface.

(ugly but in this case i think it wont hurt since the VLAN will not be used).

We do what we must, because we can.
