Skype DHCP Options 120 and 43
-
Hi all,
I want to add option 43 and option 120 in the DHCP Server options for my Skype4Business compatible phones in my meeting rooms.
I noticed that there is not such an option in the Additional DHCP options and especially option 43 is a number of five other options.
I raised it as a potential future feature in a future release and my proposal got immediately rejected and I was advised to post a new thread here.
So, my question is: How can I add these two options?
There is an old post with the same issue and someone gave instructions how to edit the services.inc file. Though, instead of asking someone to edit that file, wouldn't be more easy to add these options in the GUI? Am I the only one who wants to configure these options?
Here is the link of that post: https://forum.netgate.com/topic/51041/configuring-pfsense-dhcp-to-work-with-lync-2010-phones-dhcp-option/3
Thanks in advance.

I use option 43 for my AP.

@NogBadTheBad I don't that this is the right way. Maybe 120 but for sure not the 43.
For example, check this link about option 43 https://tomtalks.blog/2013/02/setting-up-dhcp-server-options-manually-for-lync-20102013-phones/
How can I do these in pfsense?

Your talking about sub options, think the only way would be to hand craft the DHCP file ?
A bit out of my depth.

Can you do it as a single string I wonder.

@NogBadTheBad Thanks Andy. I believe I have to edit the services.inc file . So this was my initial question/request to the Netgate guys. Instead of having me going to edit that file , and thinking that this may be needed for more people who would like to use pfsense as their DHCP server, wouldn't be a good option to add this as a feature in a future release?

Doubt it its a non standard Microsoftism no mentions of suboptions in the RFC.

@NogBadTheBad But let's focus on how can I make this work in my pfsense by the time that we decided to move our DHCP server to the pfsense. So far, the only solution is to edit the mentioned file, as I haven't found any other solution for this and for sure we are not willing to spend time bringing the DHCP server back to a Windows machine.
So the question remains: How can we make our phones work? How can we add these options in pfsense? We are talking about Skype 4 Business (Lync) , not about a totally unknown service that would require some weird configuration.

Maybe move your DHCP service for Lync to a Microsoft DHCP server.

Well, the thing is that we try to avoid this solution because I create two dependencies for my DHCP. Plus, this was our initial configuration and we decided to move the DHCP service to pfsense,
According to the old forum post that I posted previously, these sub-options can be added if we edit the services.inc file. This we haven't tried it yet, because we do not have a test environment. But the initial question remains: wouldn't be nice to add these sub-options as a patch in a future release?
Otherwise, does anybody know if the above mentioned solution (to edit the services.inc file) will work?
How can we know if Netgate would be interested if we made them a patch and give it to them?
