There are several bandwidth monitoring programs available, and they are covered in the documentation:

              http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/How_can_I_monitor_bandwidth_usage%3F

I prefer ntop, but I've used them all and they all have their merits.  :)

i prefer ntop too but it never stays online for me
it crashes after like 10 minutes or so
it's frustrating and i wish there was a fix

When it comes to what users are active I think you could use different means (and some packages as noted).

The ARP table shows the IPs and corresponding MACs that pfS has "seen" "lately". I'm not sure how long "lately" is in FreeBSD or pfS. I think it's some 10-15 min or so on some Win OSes for example. It is flushed normally after some time nonetheless.

I often look at DHCP lease page to quickly see which users are online. It also shows that for static DHCP. Others could be using statucally assigned IPs though. I guess first looking at DHCP and the ARP to see any non-DHCP IPs would give you am good idea. And also the state table showing active sessions.

                  Cheers,
