      Hi guys,

      First post on the forum.

I have been using pfsense for many years and installed it many many times on headless servers. This time around I have installed pfsense 2.4.4p3 on a new piece of hardware, once again headless, using the correct installer type. The hardware is an embedded networking system with 6 ethernet ports, so not DIY build. My excuse for coming on here is that I haven't the slightest clue as to why I am having this issue.

The issue is with the interfaces in this install. The interfaces are identified as they should in preboot and in the welcome console. However, even though they are connected physically, they are listed as being down.

I have tried to properly identify the NICs but have failed to do so in either BIOS or Management console as it is not listed. pfsense lists them as being Intel PRO/1000, though.

I haven't ever had the need to do troubleshooting so this is all new to me.
Here's a dump from the boot process, maybe something identifiable ops up for the keen eyed reader.

      Consoles: internal video/keyboard serial port
      BIOS drive C: is disk0
      BIOS 619kB/3122052kB available memory

@Deltona said in interface listed as (down) even though plugged in with active LED:

        igb0: Ethernet address: 00:d0:c9

It's an Advantech manufactured device. What model is it? Does it have LAN bypass?

est: CPU supports Enhanced Speedstep, but is not recognized.

Speed (EIST) is not enabled in the BIOS.

Run pciconf -lv to see the actual PCI device ID of the NICs.

        What does ifconfig -a report?

          Hi Steve,

I opened up the appliance after having posted this message to try and identify the hardware. It is as you pointed out an Advantech modtherboard. It isn't listed on their site however so this must be an OEM rebranded board. The appliance is branded IBM Network Security XGS.

Studying the board, I've found digital relays in the traces to the NICs. After searching further i found a reference model number 3231, which lead me to find this product: /products/ece3ad39-aace-4ee0-ac2d-14526d12eaa0/fwa-3231/mod_7cf01a43-3334-401a-aa83-db173542728a

It does indeed have LAN Bypass and there's manual describing how to control this. In one manual it says that bypass can be configured from the BIOS but this appliance BIOS is a watered down version without that option. Confirmed that the BIOS mfg code includes 'IBM'.

Trying looking for pwr/cpu/speed related settings for the EIST but there wasn't any. Next i'll try and see if I can get any OEM bios for this board then see what i'f any LAN Bypass options are presented after the update.

Ah, then yeah it's almost certainly stuck in bypass mode. If there's nothing in the BIOS to disable that there may be jumpers on the board. It also looks like it has an OOB access device, you should try connecting to that to see if it exposes any additional options.

What specific IBM XGS model is it?

            Steve
