Obtaining configuration from a semi-dead m1n1wall?
-
After 8 years of solid service my m1n1wall (2.3.1) appears to be dying. I can't bring up the web configurator, and it won't hand out DHCP addresses to any new clients, no matter how many times I reboot it.
I did have an APU2 lying around, so I put 2.4.4 on that and got my network back up again, but when I looked for a m1n1wall configuration file to restore to the APU2, I saw that my last saved configuration was from a few years ago.
I can still establish a serial console connection to the m1n1wall. Does the configuration live in an XML somewhere on the CF card that I can extract over the serial connection?
Or, if I can find a CF reader, can I find it that way? How would I even mount the CF card on a Mac or Windows machine?
Thanks!

The config file is at /cf/conf/config.xml
View or transfer this single file with a terminal program (serial/telnet ssh) is was easier than trying to mount the CF card elsewhere. I never succeeded doing so but never tried for >10s since it was never actually needed. -
Remove the CF card, pop it in a CF reader, plug the CF reader into your new pfSense box and mount it there -- not on your workstation.
You could copy the config directly over to the new device disk, or once it's connected you could download it to your workstation using scp/sftp or via Diag > Command, then do whatever you need to do with it from there.

Thanks, all! I was able to get the old box up and running for a few minutes, and I downloaded the configuration the normal way.
But I did telnet in and browse /cf/conf, just to verify that I could see it, and I did cat config.xml just for fun.
So if I ever am in this pickle again, I'll know what to do!
