I have a new SG-1100, that has been plugged in an on for only a few days. I am still experimenting and learning PFSense, so it does not have much of a workload. The unit is surprisingly warm, hot even. Is this normal?

Hot is a subjective term but it does run quite warm to the touch, it's passively cooled.

An infrared thermometer shows ~45°C on the bottom of the case, where the heat spreader is.

Ok, I'm pretty comfortable calling 45°C/113°F "hot." Thanks - it is reassuring that it's not unusual.

Since that box has a couple of USB ports, you could add a little USB powered fan. I’d put it on the bottom, sit the SG-1100 right on top, and blow air onto it from below.

@akuma1x Excellent thought. Do you have any specific USB fan (or source, other than just googling for it) that you suggest?

                Something like this:

                https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G059G86/

                or this one:

                https://www.amazon.com/AC-Infinity-MULTIFAN-Receiver-Playstation/dp/B00G05A2MU

That last one "might" be a double fan kit, attached together with a single USB cable.
