How to install pfsense on Sophos UTM 220 ?

  • Hello,
I would like to install pfsense on an utm 220, however on boot I have only the options of USB-FDD or USB-ZIP USB-CDROM.

If I plug a simple usb stick all freeze.

I can full it somehow to boot from usbstick ?
    thank you,
    Daniel

That has to be some old hardware if it has a zip disk option. 😉

What is the CPU in that?

What image are you trying to boot exactly?

  • @stephenw10. Cpu it's celeron 2.2ghz
I'm trying to install latest pfsense image.
However i think that the issue it's on bios since it's requesting usb cdrom...

Do you know exactly what Celeron that is? There have been a lot of 2.2GHz Celerons.

Does it look like it's trying to boot at all?

Can you prove the USB stick/image is good by booting it in something else?

    Steve

  • the Same usb stick I have used on other computer and has been working.

Fact it's if I try to plug the usb stick on it , freezes all computer stops even on memory tests.

it's extremely strange , I haven't seen this until now, when plugging usb stick computer freezes.

Any ideea would be greatly appreciated.
I will try to find an usb cd-rom

No idea really. If it doesn't even complete POST that looks like some low level incompatibility.

I have worked past similar things by installing in something else and moving the HD across.

I'm assuming that is at least something 64bit capable?

Indeed , I will look to find an usb-cdrom

Someone told me that this device has 3 sata ports and I may plug a cdrom on it.

I'm assuming that is at least something 64bit capable?
I truly hope. I hope to see pfsense on it. However digging further more, I have found out that even to upgrade it's complicated .

Well what CPU does it actually have? You should be able to see that in the BIOS. Or at least from the boot log of whatever OS was on it. Or by physical inspection if necessary. 😉

I have managed to install pfsense on it . Bios version very old
Release Date: Tue Oct 18 2011

I have managed to install using an usb cdrom. otherwise with usb stick didn't boot at all.

    CPU Type Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU E1500 @ 2.20GHz
    2 CPUs: 1 package(s) x 2 core(s)
    AES-NI CPU Crypto: No

I will try to buy an E5700 to see.
What a dislike it's that it's very noisy.

I was delighted that has 8 ports of 1gb. now I'm a bit reluctant.

    Mmm, that's old indeed!

You can probably reduce the minimum fan speed in the BIOS assuming it is not running hot. Setting the target temperature slightly higher can also reduce the fan speed on an auto fan controlled board.
