      trying to find root cause, anyone know what it could be?

        what is it? pfsense version? is it a virtual machine?

          Googling around, that seems to be from Xen interfaces. So I'd say something changed in your Xen hypervisor which propagated to the guest VMs.

            Its a PFsense 2.4.4 P3 running on a Xen hypervisor, so yes it is a virtuel machine.
