Optiplex 7020 Intel Pro 1000 - Pfsense
-
Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex 7020 and I try to connect a Intel Pro 1000 quad port gigabit pci-e to create a Pfsense Router.
When I installed the Network card and initiated the computer said: Initializing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.5.58 PXE 2.1 Build 092 (wfm 2.0).
I went to the bios and change in System Configuration- Integrated NIC - Enabled w/PXE to Enabled, then I try to run the computer with the Ethernet card and the screen going black.(I can't go run the bios) (The only I can do is turn off the computer and sound a little beep) If I disconnected the Ethernet card is run the operating system normally.
Thanks,
-
@rick_it Unless you are setup to run PXE (PXE is Pre eXecution Environment) I don't think you'll need it enabled. Typically after being unable to find a server after a given time, it will time out and go on with the normal boot procedure.
I'm not certain what you are saying, but I'm going to take a stab at it. So it appears your 7020 already has an OS on it (Windows Server, Linux, etc.) correct? Do you plan to use the entire server to run pfSense on? If so, you'll need to install pfSense on that hardware. You can leave the network card in. Installing from USB would be easy enough. The Intel Pro card should be detected and you will see it in the pfSense setup.
Here is a link that walks you through the installation process with some good screenshots for your reference.

Hi,
When I put in the Network card it doesn't let me run the bios.
Thanks,

it may be that the network card is faulty and prevent the motherboard to pass the POST (Power-On Self-Test)
but try cleaning the contacts with alcohol or reseat it in another slot -
Yeah, this is a hardware problem unrelated to pfSense.
make sure you're running the latest available BIOS version. Test the card in something else to make sure it's good.
