Pfsense Hardware Recommendation(Affordable)
-
Hey guys hope you are all safe and sound, so i have a question i have been meaning to ask for a very long time. I currently use Hp desktop that i have made as my pfsense router but it is; 1. Big 2. Power consumption is a little bit high 3.Does not support AES-NI (which is not a big deal) . I need a custom firewall router that ; 1. Is small and manageble 2. Is affordable (prefarably $ 130 and below on either ebay or amazon) 3. Consumes less power (15W and below on full capacity) 4. Allows Multiple Wan Nics. So what can you guys recommend ?

Protectli, rock solid hardware and plenty of options. It's going to be a little above your price point, but honestly if you want rock solid, then moving into the sub-200$ realm instead of the sub-$130 realm is the better option.

I have no experience with that, but it is older, discontinued hardware so I personally would shy away from it for any serious use, including for home use. Just ask yourself, if the router goes down and no-one can get to the Internet, how much stress is that going to be on you? Personally, I would have kids and the wife screaming, so I opt for a little more $$$ in order to have something rock solid and will last a couple years. In fact, I'm looking at getting a second one for an HA config so maintenance and upgrades can happen without interruption...

It will be difficult to recommend hardware given your budget, which doesn't include shipping unless you have eBay or Amazon in Africa. I checked and there was an eBayforAfrica but I could not access the computer section to see what's available...maybe geo-location blocked. So, it seems that you will need to do your own leg work to find a few options then we can help you pick one.

That was an important detail missing from the original post and I agree, it's going to be extremely difficult to make any recommendations based on your budget and consider shipping.
