2.4.5 - Memory Usage jumped from 16% to 61% (compared to 2.4.4p3)
-
Hello
I have several Virtual Machines running 2.4.4p3 which all average ~16% of Ram usage on a fresh boot.
On the ones I updated to 2.4.5 I noticed immediately they started using 61% of Ram.
Its affecting every VM I update to 2.4.5.
=========== 2.4.4P3 ===============
=========== 2.4.5 ===============
I cant see the difference in TOP, only in the Dashboard. Is it bad reporting?
Thank you

Greetings,
Apologies if this has been addressed, I could not seem to find any resolution in the forum. We have several SG-3100 firewalls that migrated from 2.4.4p3 to 2.4.5 without any noticable issue. However, a larger site using an XG-1537 experienced the below. No other changes were made, just the upgrade to 2.4.5. CPU does not appear affected. Performance seems OK, but our NMS is grumpy about the mem jump. We are not using pfBlocker. Has anyone figured out what is causing the large difference in memory utilization?
Thanks!

I take it back. Looking further into the past it turns out the low memory usage was the anomaly. Not sure what happened there, but the 2.4.5 bump actually put performance back to historical norms.

That is likely a side effect of https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/10414 and should be better on 2.4.5-p1 if that is the case.

Thanks for the response, jimp. To be clear, we are not experiencing any CPU issues. Does the linked bug also impact memory utilization?
-
Yes, pf tables were consuming a lot of memory for statistics counters per table entry which were not being utilized (so all wasted space). I'm not sure if it is manifesting exactly as yours is, but it was making a significant difference in some cases.

Some additional color here. I noticed that the System Information widget on the Dashboard did not agree with SNMP on memory usage. We have been using net-snmp on this XG. I temporarily changed over to to the native snmp package and now Iโm really confused! Has net-snmp been providing incorrect memory data all along?
Maybe I need to start a new thread, I think we are only having a data reporting issue, not a memory performance issue.
Is there a CLI equivalent of โfree -hโ where I can see what FreeBSD thinks of memory utilization?

Doesn't look like free is included, but you can try Diagnostics/System Activity.
