Hi, I have been playing with both pfSense and the other one.. and both systems have their merits.
I have decided to stick to pfSense as I have found there to be much more support online from this forum and from other services.

      But..

I was initially put off due to the AES-NI requirement in future releases and didn't want to shaft myself. EDIT I understand that now this isn't a problem

I am running a Watchguard XTM 5 series

Well ... I wouldn't expect anyone here to heartily recommend you use the "competition" due to, at the very least, "friendly rivalry" ☺. This is where the pfSense Home Team lives. You are posting on a pfSense forum by the way.

The AES-NI requirement is not in either the 2.4.x RELEASE branch nor the 2.5 DEVEL branch. So given the typical lifetime of a pfSense release, I would think any hardware you currently have would be past its prime by the time (and if) AES-NI support becomes mandatory in pfSense.

Here is the offical Blog annoucement for the 2.5 DEVEL branch where Netgate states they removed the AES-NI requirement: https://www.netgate.com/blog/pfsense-2-5-0-development-snapshots-now-available.html.

@bmeeks thankyou for the reply. I have decided to stick to pfsense. To me any shortcomings are far outweighed by the solid platform and numerous other features.
I have freshly installed and have Internet connection all working etc. I have noticed however my gateway is showing as offline, however clearly this can't be the case if I am actively getting an Internet connection and browse...??

Horrible choice of wording there.. If your concern was with aes-ni going forward and such.. You should of just asked that, and not mention that other distro that will not be named by me..

As to what your seeing with your gateway.. Your going to have to provide some actual info.. Clearly if your gateway you were using was actually down, then no you wouldn't be using that gateway.

Something.. Do you have more than 1, are you using a vpn. Are you behind a nat? Or is it public... What sort of connection is it.

You have provided ZERO info to help you figure out what is going on..

Are you using IPv6? etc. etc.. Something to work with!

                  Hi,
forgive me, I am very new to pfsense. ive only been looking at it for about 2-3weeks, playing around with it.
I am not sure what information I need to provide you.... I have a VPN set up now, literally set it up 5 mins ago and the issue was there before and still it now.
I have a DM200 modem connected to BT, set to modem only mode, connected to my pfSense and onward to the network switch...

How about a screenshot of what your seeing... to start with...

Its like you went to the mech and said hey my car is broke, but I drove here in it..
