Fanless hardware with minimum 4 ethernet ports

If you were prepared to use a VLAN capable switch you could have a single physical interface supporting five (or more) VLAN interfaces and you would then have the possibility of using a fanless mini-ITX motherboard.
Examples of low end VLAN capable switches include Linksys SLM2008 (8 Gigabit ports) and HP Procurve 1700-8 (1 Gigabit port, 7 10/100 ports). I suspect you could get a low end VLAN capable switch for a similar price to a 4-port PCI card.

I don't think 2 WAN's are likely to work on a single VLAN. But why not two WANs on two VLANs? The VLAN capable switch could be configured to have two distinct "WAN" ports corresponding to the two "WAN" VLANs on the single physical link to the pfSense box.

Use an ALIX 2D3 with 3 NICs with one NIC for each WAN port, then plug your LAN port into a VLAN switch and use VLANs for all your local area networks.

If you just want to set up a simple router, then you dont need a LOT of hardware juice.
When you say fanless, I assume you say that because you want it SILENT>An AMD Fusion PC is virtually silent (have to listen really hard I hear). You could add cards….
I dunno lol. When it comes to things like these, I dont get pre-bundled stuff, I build my own.
A dirt cheap PIII With a Big huge heatsink, and underclock it.
Then get a 120MM fan, and run it on the 5v line...Quiet as ever.
Would you consider building a system yourself for this purpose? -
I recently bought a Lanner FW-7520 (http://www.lannerinc.com/Network_Application_Platforms/x86_Network_Appliance/Desktop-Fanless_Appliances/FW-7520) for my house. I've been doing a remodel and decided to pull cat-6 everywhere along with a plenum mounted 802.11n AP. I was mainly looking for something with gigabit ports and enough CPU to push the data through. It boots the 1.2.3-RC2 embedded images just fine and appears to be able to handle 30MB/s from wireless to wired with a fair number of pf rules enabled. The only disadvantage so far is that my application puts the machine inside an in-wall cabinet that gets closed and so no air is running over the massive heatsink (or should I call it the case?). In this situation, it gets quite hot to the touch, but appears to be running fine. I haven't been able to figure out how to retrieve the CPU temperature or enable CPU frequency stepping, so I don't know a) if this is a problem or b) if it can be mitigated easily.

There are actually 3 versions:
FW-7520A - 600Mhz Celeron M
FW-7520B - 1Ghz Celeron M with no cache
FW-7520C - 1Ghz Celeron M with cacheI bought the FW-7520B directly from Lanner USA. The cost as of March 29, 2009 was $430 + tax + S/H. I had tried to get the FW-7520C originally, but it wasn't immediately available. Being an OEM device, they wanted to sell to me in quantity and give me a price break. I told them it was for a custom application and they happily sold me quantity 1.
