I'm very new to pfSense and networking in general, so forgive me in advance if my questions are dumb. I can assure you I googled the hell out of it… 😅

      I have a SG-1100 > Netgear switch > Synology DS218+ setup.

I made my DHCP range from 192.168.1.200 to 192.168.1.245

I created a couple of static mappings:

      • computer 192.168.1.100
      • Syno NAS 192.168.1.101

When I did that, I couldn't access the NAS at 192.168.1.101:5000

I checked with the SynologyAssistant app and it could see the NAS on 192.168.1.101

When I checked Diagnostics / ARP Table I could see the NAS MAC address with the right IP… I was stuck out of my NAS so I thought I'd revert back and first deleted the static mapping. As soon as I did that, 192.168.1.101:5000 started loading just fine… 😅 But if I look at Status / DHCP Leases my NAS is not there 🤔

I thought I was starting to understand how to use DHCP but clearly there's a big chunk of knowledge I'm missing because this makes zero sense to me… Why would assigning a static IP block the NAS web admin? And more importantly, now that I removed that static mapping and the NAS web admin works, how come there's no DHCP lease in pfSense?

      I'm so confused…

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Be it dhcp reservation (static mapping) or just out of the pool makes no difference..

@johnpoz Sorry, like I mentioned I'm a total noob, and I'm afraid I have no idea what you mean… Sorry! 😅 No difference for what?

I guess the one thing I'm the most confused about is why would my NAS not show up on the list of DHCP leases (but still have 192.168.1.101 assigned to it when I check with Synology Assistant)

Whatever your issue was with connectivity to your dsm on port 5000 has nothing to do be your nas got its IP from just normal dhcp pool, or a reservation or if you set it static.

            Could you ping it?

edit: if it was given a lease then it would be listed. You sure your not setting the IP on the nas directly?

Are you running firewall on nas?

@johnpoz since it started working, after that I just added the static mapping back in and everything seems ok.

Is it possible that maybe it just took a while for the lease to show up in the list?

Maybe just a glitch in the matrix?

I HATE when I don't know why something happened… But I guess I'm gonna have to let that one go. There's too much I need to learn as it is.

              Thanks for your help!
