Gateway not pingable, and no internet
Just got a /29 public static IPs from ISP (AllStream Fiber).
using only one ip .98 with gateway .97, no modem, just a ethernet cable plug into a dedicated switch then to the firewall NIC.
Fresh install, all i have done is follow the wizard and disable the offload checksum setting
Default Route goes to .97, checked log nothing get dropped, gateway is set to .97 at route, NAT is at Auto, packet capture looks good as ARP are responding the correct mac.
However, it can't ping/reach the .97, just timed out on capture log.
I also have a ipFire Box setup along side with .102 IP, same gateway via the same switch, it works fine after input the IP and Gateway and DNS.
I even tried opnSense with the same setting, no luck, it almost seems like something is blocking it, even i added the gateway IP in the rules on both wan and lan to any allowed, nothing show up on the log with accept or drop.
Also swap with new cable, and setup another pfSense box with .99, same thing happen, doesn't look like hardware issue.
If someone can shed me some light, I will be much appreciated.
PS: All done on a physical server, not VMs.
If you can't even ping the gateway, then it has nothing to do with routing. If your address is configured correctly, it's some hardware issue. Do the Ethernet link lights turn on? Is the cable good?
That is what i have suspected, however, i have replaced the cable with a brand new one, tested both old and new cable and it is fine.
Also tried different interface, the internet is on the Quad Boardcom server card, tried it on the onboard slot, same thing.
The same issue was also on the backup firewall with a dlink NIC, which i had a working pfSense installed and it had no issue with the previous ISP static IP setting.
If it is a hardware issue, it shouldn't happen on a different computer, if it is a ISP config issue, why would the ipFire Box works. Good thing is that is a new office and not being use until September, so i still get some time to figure it out.
I have often suggested connecting a another computer, in place of pfSense, to see if that reveals the problem. Aside from the cable, there's also the modem itself.
BTW, I have set up some fibre for Allstream, but it generally involved a box from Ciena that converted from fibre to Ethernet, which would then connect to the router. Do you have one of those? If so, they should have also provided the router config, which you could use to test with a computer. However, if it looks like that's the issue, you should be talking to Allstream.
Nah, i only got a cable hanging from the ceiling terminated at the server room, no router or those Ethernet extender. The fiber line is from allstream, but it is the building management who maintain it and resale the internet to different floor.
Been told it is just plug it into a switch, to the firewall and plug in the assigned ip.
The thing is, it worked on a computer with ipFire, i will have to try it again this weekend to see if direct connection on the laptop works.
