Look what I just found on one of my shelves - yeah this is going in the trash ;)

I could have used that years ago, with my first ThinkPad. It came with 802.11b only WiFi, which I replaced with one capable of g. However, in the swap, I lost my dial up modem. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

My current ThinkPad has n on 2.4 GHz only, though it's apparently possible to replace that with a dual band card.

      I also have a 10 Mb hub here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

PfSense running on Qotom mini PC
i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.
      UniFi AC-Lite access point

      I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...

That's not even Cardbus... like 16bit? Rapido!

You guys would have a meltdown if you saw the Hardware I had lying around.

Dude, time to throw stuff away! It's nostalgic and all, but old tech is rarely useful.

Early part of the pandemic - looking for shit to do I cleaned out my shelves and threw away a bunch of junk... Got some frustration out breaking up some old hard drives.. The really not that old 2.5 disks are nice but too small in size to do anything with - you hit them with a hammer and platters just shatter like glass and its like they are full of pebbles or sand when you shake them.. That was fun! ;)

Threw out some old floppy drives.. Just taking up space, etc..

But these old pcmcia cards were on the top of my desk - and got missed.. They are in the trash now... heheheh.. Even the oldest laptop I have, which should prob throw out doesn't even have a slot for them.

edit: Wow.. But just because it says gig on it, doesn't mean it can actually do anything close to it ;)

I've actually found old tech to be quite useful, in many circumstances.

Well, around here all the kids were required to buy devices for school. So they could run 'chrome'.

Threw some SSDs in the old laptops, and gave them to the poor kids. Parents didn't have to waste cash on new chromebooks, and they were able to do their school work.

Just a matter of knowing where and when.

A lot of people are using Raspberry Pies, and those are 'older' depending on your perspective.

'Best connectivity'. You can feel the quality! ๐Ÿ˜‰

But it's cardbus and that laptop supports it so it's probably 32bit PCI. You would hope for more than 200Mbps! (or I would at least).

Where are you at - my grandkids all got devices free from the school.. My six year old grandson got a ipad, and 10 year old grand daughter got a dell laptop.

@stephenw10 That is what I thought. But didn't notice it as an issue, until I upgraded with my ISP.

@johnpoz Alberta. School Board ant no piggy bank. They offered devices, but not free. Cheapest were still $300CAD.

Check the PCI bus. Maybe it has something else on there doing something funky? pciconf -lv

The FreeBSD drivers for other things of that age are probably....sub optimal!

Disable anything you can in the BIOS etc.

What does your /var/log/dmesg.boot look like? Errors in there?

That sucks.. But even here in chicago they were giving away devices.. Pretty sure CPS gave away like 100k devices, with priority going to lower income families..

edit: They want them back after this is all over though.

I am curious where that budget came from ;) You would hope that the makers would step up and donate, or atleast offer them at fraction of cost, etc.

But a new pi would be a great little device for sure - at very low cost.. problem would be is I don't think they make enough of them for the situation we are in.
