We have a vlan with a captive portal. Occasionally wireless users have problems getting a network address. The users have on their wifi device the message retrieving IP address and a timeout after a while.

On the router everything looks normal. An ip address is assigned (shown as offline/active), and nothing strange in the dhcp and captive portal logs.

The solution is to remove the dhcp lease (and sometimes also the ARP entry). After that everything works normally.

Trouble shooting is hard, because this occurs once a few weeks, for single users. Any idea what the problem might be, and how to investigate further?

We have also wired clients (no vlan) there seems no issues on this part of the network.

The problem occurs on a pc based Pfsense route, and also on a Netgate XG-7100
