      when pfsense starts it stays in the welcome screen and only continues if you manually indicate an option

        What option are you indicating there? Do you mean the boot-loader menu?

            It should automatically boot option 1 from there (the loader menu) when the countdown finishes. What happens?

            However the default countdown value there is 3 so you have changed a setting there. I suggest you removed any non-default loader.conf values you may have added.
