      Hello pfSense friends,

I have started to get a issue the last couple of months. Sometimes i lose internet connection for 1-2 minutes, and then everything is back to normal. I have tried several ways to find out if there is a switch or something thats the problem, but im not sure how to figure this out.

How would be the best way to check if its the my SG-3100 box is the one that lose the connection?

The first place to check is the pfSense system logs -- specifically the Gateways tab. You can find that under STATUS > SYSTEM LOGS and then click the Gateways tab. You would be looking for gateway alarm notices indicating that pfSense has lost the ability to ping the monitor IP (which by default is usually your default gateway). If you see those kinds of messages, the problem is most likely with your ISP.

You also need to more clearly define "lose internet connection". Are you physically losing the ability to send any traffic (for example, you can't ping 8.8.8.8 and get a reply), or is it really DNS lookups stalling or failing that would point to DNS issues (for example, you can ping 8.8.8.8, but when you try to ping google.com you get an error).

Since you say the problem persists for 1-2 minutes, that really sounds more like an issue on your ISP's side of things rather than with pfSense. The one exception to that would be if what is really happening is the unbound DNS resolver is restarting frequently and thus leading to sporadic DNS "outages" for your LAN (assuming here that you have the out-of-the-box defaults where the DNS Resolver is enabled and is handed out to DHCP clients as the DNS server to use). This is why I said up top that you need to more clearly define what you mean by "lose internet connection".

          Thanks for reply.

There is nothing in the log that says something about lost the ability to ping the default gateway or close to that.

When i play games, i sometimes lose all connection to internet, same happends when i try to surf the web via a browser. Same also happends when streaming on Apple TV.

A lot more information about your setup is needed before much else can be suggested.

What type of physical layer connection do you have? Is your ISP a cable provider using DHCP, a telecom DSL provider likely with PPPoE, one of the FTTH providers like Verizon or Google or AT&T, etc.?

What are your subscribed upload and download speeds? Contrast this with what you actually get using a speedtest to one of the many testing sites on the web.

If you have a modem from your ISP, is the unit in bridge mode?

What packages, if any, have you installed on your firewall?

              Hello,

I found out of this problem in the end. It seems like the EgdeSwitch X10 was the reason of the dropouts. Have not happend for over 10 days now. Thank you for all the help!
