pfSense Router Freezing Periodically
-
I have installed pfSense on a Zotac Zbox-CI325. While the router is running everything works fine. It will run for about a week at a time, then freeze up. It's not an exact amount of time; sometimes it's 5 days, sometimes 7. When it freezes, the internet is cut off, I can't ping the router, and it won't display any output when connected to HDMI. I have set it up to send the logs to my PC, but when it freezes and stops logging, the last few logs don't appear to have any relationship to each other or the freezing. Is there a specific type of log I could search or filter for? Does anyone have any suggestions for diagnosing the problem? It has had this problem since the original fresh install.
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Try at the console hitting
ctl+t
. That can often show something when nothing else does.
If it does it will respond with what process it's waiting for.If there is nothing at all on the console it's probably a hardware issue.
Do you get a crash report on the dashboard after you reboot it?

When I press ctrl+t, I get
load 0.32 cmd: sh 50394 [ttyin] 5.85r 0.00u 0.00s 0% 2708kI've never received any crash reports. It would be nice to find something to lead me in a direction. It's difficult to just test different things, because it takes about a week to tell if the problem is going to reoccur or not.

I observe similar behavior on one of my two Zotac Zbox-CI329 pfsense installations. Interestingly it is doing an ordered shutdown when the power button is pressed in this situation.
@RLD831 Is your's behaving similar or didn't you try to shutdown yours in this case? -
I haven't tried shutting it down in any of those situations. I haven't used the button to turn the router off at all. When I reboot through the GUI, it works perfectly and has neven hung there.

Hmm, so not completely hung. Does it always report the same process

? The same time5.85
?There are a number of tweaks for those Zotac boxes in various threads here. I've never used one so I'm unsure what they are. I seem to recall disbaling the SD card reader was one.
Have a search through the forum and see if there is anything for your model.Steve

Hi Steve,
thanks for the hint regarding tweaks for the Zotac Boxes. I stumbled over the threads regarding the Realtek NICs of these boxes.
After reading a bit in this thread https://forum.netgate.com/topic/135850/official-realtek-driver-binary-1-95-for-2-4-4-release/138 I found hints in my logs, that this could be the problem in my case. So I installed the Realtek driver and give it some time...Thanks again and best regards!
