Is it possible to develop a dncp / dns server virtual appliance based on pfsense? You already have the necessary operating system, services and interfaces. The most important difference between these two is that a wan port is not required because the router / firewall function is not necessary. At least one lan port is required configurable via dhcp, console or web interface. Multiple Lan ports could be configured to configure various DNS and/or DHCP services. This would not be a major problem if it is not possible to program several dns configurations. I know that the dhcp service can be configured on each lan. Another big difference between these two is that you can configure multiple subnets In each lan. For example: from 192.168.100.1 to 192.168.115.255. It does not matter if it is necessary to enter the subnets individually or if 255 and the router's IP are automatically excluded. I imagine that the best thing is to show all the available IPs in a table, one line for each subnet and that this does not include 255 and the router's IP.The web interface could provide for adding exceptions that remove IPs from the available IP's table.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but both DHCP and DNS servers are built into pfsense.

PfSense running on Qotom mini PC
i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.
        UniFi AC-Lite access point

        I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...
