For those of you who run pfSense on a Watchguard XTM 5 Series with a physical hard drive.. What size drive do you use, 2.5 or 3.5? If you use a 2.5 where did you get your hard drive caddy from? I bought one and the screw holes on it don't line up with what's on the case. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks guys.

I use a 2.5" SSD and sticky-back velcro pads. Which works great. šŸ˜‰

I never thought of that. Thanks Steve. I will try that today and let you know how it goes.

I've never had any issues with it. SSDs are so light it's more than secure enough. Also tool free!

I've never seen a caddy that would fit whatever custom spacing Lanner used there. You could likely make something from flat plate if required.

Just use anything like this as long as it is PVC. Then you can drill holes and cut out edges if necessary. I have done so on several XTM5's... very simple šŸ˜‰
Make sure when choosing a tray the mounting holes are outside of the mounted ssd, so you can attach it to the case. If the mounting holes are below the ssd, you won't be able to do so...

alternatively get a ssd to msata adapter, it has one hole on the PCB to screw it to the case. Done that, too.

What are your experiences with 2.5 vs 3.5 SSD's and 24/7 on time ?

I have terrible experiences with the "newer" 1TB mechanical 2.5" .
They are just not made for 24/7.

I learned (the hard way) not to be "green" and use a mechanical 2.5" as system disk in a Linux server.

Now i only use 3.5" if going mechanical.

I can think of zero reason to use a mechanical drive for pfSense. 32GB is huge for pfSense and that's about as small as you can get in an SSD these days.

Well maybe this should have been in "Off topic"
I meant disks in general .. And i'd only use mechanicals where i needed more than 1TB ... Ie backups

                    Sorry
