pfSense pre-configured image
-
Hello everyone,
I would like to ask you if does it exist any pre-configured pfSense installation image, that I can copy to a compact flash and run on an Alix board.
I don't have any serial cable, so I need to configure it from web GUI with a default ip address.
Thank you and and happy new year! -
A vega/keyboard access is needed. If this is not possible, the next best would be : serial access. It's one or the other - or both.
Because : when the system boot - if it's able to boot on your device, it - the kernel - will find one or more NIC's. These have to be assigned by you, like em0 == WAN and em1 = LAN.
If pfSense was be able to this by itself, this introduce also a security risk.It is of course possible to prepare an ISO image with an pre fabricated config file. But if something goes wrong, and the web GUI server doesn't work anymore, you lose complete access to your device.
So, see the Alix board is your car see the serial cable as the key.

Ok, thank you very much for explanation.
I ask you another thing: wich is the right pfSense image for Alix devices? -
@djdmx Probably :
You can chose the mirror as you like.

If it's an actual ALIX board that is 32bit and has 256MB RAM so there is no current pfSense image that will run on it. The last one was 2.3.5 Nano but that was some years ago now.
I would go to OpenWRT if you need to keep using that hardware. Otherwise it's upgrade time.
