When trying to use the 7-23-06 snapshot, and both cores enabled, we can get around 4 megabit throughput on a 20 mb metro ethernet connection. With only one core running, it runs at 20 mb from the same download location. This is repeatable every time we test. Is this an issue with SMP?

Probably not SMP per se, any chance you have traffic shaping enabled?  Might be an ALTQ bug related to SMP.

Yes, traffic shaping was enabled. I'll turn off the traffic shaping, and enable the second core to see if the problem goes away. I'll try to find time tomorrow.

        Thanks

Just have it running with 1 core right now. It's only running a 20 mb fiber connection as a traffic shaping firewall. I'm going to see if I can get it working with both cores enabled when I flash it to the newest version hopefully next week.

              Incidentally as a follow up….

This machine has pushed sustained traffic in excess of 800mbit and 40k sessions/connections with pfsense. Performance is great.

The Juniper Netscreen it replaced choked up at 200mbit.

I've been meaning to reply to this thread for months now as I did the testing immediately after seeing the original posting….

I used a Dell Precision 620 box that had a Pentium D - 830 (3.0 GHz) with 1 GB Ram for the testing.  With both cores enabled and listed, there were no slow-downs whatsoever.  Testing it in both 100mbit and 1000mbit modes passed without any issues at all.  I even upgraded to the later releases a few months back and had the same, good results.

I am glad nexusone was also able to test out and report back positive results as well  :)
