So at a basic level, all I've replaced is a high end home use router + model combo unit with a separate Modem and separate pfSense Firewall. And I'm noticing a marginal difference in performance with accessing the internet (inside the above network). What gives?

No configuration as yet, just testing config and setup before doing anything serious.

You do realize that what you do has no effiect on your performance, so long as your network is capable of handling what you get from the Internet. For example, my home network is capable of 1 Gb, but I only get 500 Mb from my ISP.

PfSense running on Qotom mini PC
i5 CPU, 4 GB memory, 32 GB SSD & 4 Intel Gb Ethernet ports.
          UniFi AC-Lite access point

          I haven't lost my mind. It's around here...somewhere...
