Howdy! I have a couple of Older Netgate SG-2440s that are apparently on Community Edition. They updated to 2.5 just fine, but I'd like to convert them to Plus if that's possible. I half assumed they would automatically do that but no. Any help would be much appreciated!

Is there an upgrade path to pfSense+ if the original device purchased was a Netgate rather than a pfSense branded device and therefore didn't come with the factory edition?

If it was originally supplied as an RCC-VE device with CentOS it is considered a whitebox and the path to Plus would be the same. It's not available yet but soon will be. The registration process linked above will be part of that.

If it was supplied with pfSense originally and was accidentally installed with CE at some point then just open a ticket with us to get the 21.02 image: https://go.netgate.com/
You will need to re-install but you can import the existing config.

If your appliance came with pfSense Factory on it, you can request an image for your appliance to run pfSense Plus 21.02 by opening a ticket with support.

Thanks Steve, this is the case. Once it is available do I need to install it and then the registration menu will be available?

Also, will the white box version that will be available for the RCC-VE devices have access to the hardware optimisations for the Netgate devices?

It's available now if your device was shipped with pfSense. Just open a ticket to get the image.

If it was an RCC-VE device it will have access to the same image once it becomes possible to register devices for that.

@stephenw10 I opened a ticket for this yesterday around midnight, and received the answer from a live support human within 60 seconds. I'm blown away by how on the ball you guys are. Thanks!

Given that Plus addition is now available for whitebox hardware, is there a path to get the factory edition of pfSense Plus for RCC-VE devices?

For example could I just purchase a pfSense+ w/ TAC Lite subscription for my device which is currently $0/month and would that entitle me to the factory edition for my RCC-VE device?

Hmm, this is an interesting edge case! The resulting install from installing CE and then upgrading to plus would be recognised as a Netgate device but because the installer itself is different it may not get the usual tuning tweaks. Let me check into that for you...

Ok currently there is only provision for access to Plus images for paying customers. So, though this is an edge case, it would not apply to TAC Lite whilst it is free of charge.

However the only difference I can see that there would be is that powerd is not enabled by default in the CE image. And that's a single check box.

@stephenw10 thanks for clarifying. I have an RCC-VE-8860, does that get any additional tweaks or is it just powerd not enabled by default in the CE image?

That would be the same. Once you've updated to Plus you will have access to the additional packages etc only powerd would need to be enabled.
