      During the boot process, after the dmesg.boot log stage and just before the pfsense logo is displayed (but i can't find these lines in any of the logs) where the ramdisk is loaded, it says;

      Filesystems Loaded
      ZFS.....
      ZFS.....
      Invalid character "[" in the command (or words to that effect)

        Any way you can get the full output of the error? If it's a VGA console, you could take a picture of the screen, or hit Scroll Lock and then Page Up a few times and see if you can get back to it.

        If it's serial console you could copy the output from a terminal connected to the console while it boots.

          @jimp I don't have a screen at the location anymore.
          I have my ramdisk enabled, with the boot disk as zfs.
          After the last entries in dmes.boot you have ZFS filesystem mounted (appears twice)..something like...moving to ram or similar

          couple of lines after that, you get the pfsense logo in ascii characters followed by the menu.

          should have taken a pic when i had the monitor downstairs, sorry.
          why isn't this console written to a log? It is not in the system log. it seems there is a small period where the console is not logged. - not great for headless systems ;-)

          p.s. my system is a 2.4.5_p3 upgrade. i don't recall seeing the error under 2.4.5. hope that helps

            It's too early for anything in the OS to capture output at that stage, so it can't be logged.

                That definitely looks like a bug . Can you create an entry for that on https://redmine.pfsense.org?

                Be sure to attach that picture, and link back to this forum thread.

                Thanks!

                  @jimp Issue #11617 created.

                  p.s. i am also getting 'can't find /etc/hostid' directly after
                  /boot/kernel/opensolaris.ko

                  is this something to be concerned about, or is it non-netgate h/w related?

                    I'm not sure what that one might be from, but if it's that early in the boot process it's likely from a kernel module that is being loaded (from loader.conf or loader.conf.local).

                    I don't think we setup a hostid file and I'm not aware of anything we have that requires it to be present.

                      @jimp hi Jim, the hostid is related to ZFS I think.

                      I have the boot drive configured as ZFS and I note on my freenas box, it does have a hostid but initially shows "no hostid" in the initial stage of the boot. Presumably, it is later retrieved from the freenas config...I don't know.
