can we add update accelerator to work together with squid, i had great features, see their link here:

The Update Accelerator caches files from update sites automatically at the first request. All subsequent downloads of these files from other clients will be processed with LAN speed.
Even though the standard Web Proxy cache does almost the same job, there are important differences between the Web Proxy cache and the Update Accelerator cache.
For example, it would be difficult to store, reliably, a Service Pack with a size of about 300MB in the Web Proxy cache. Unlike a Web Proxy with its internal cache and uncontrollable results, the Update Accelerator works rather in a similar way to a File Server - dead reliable and independent of any Proxy cache size or replacement strategy.

* Increases download speed - up to factor 1.500 for a 64kBit/s ISDN connection.
* Guaranteed delivery from the local cache, even if the Web Proxy cache has been cleared.

I have been doing this with the normal squid package for a very long time. I do not fully understand how this package differs from Squid, but for the time being we are getting 10MB/sec+ with any downloads that have already been requested before. Try upping the max object size and disk cache size in the GUI and see how it goes.

as per update accelerator site, you can move your updates any where you want, this is good if you want to format your server for any reason, also you can copy files to another server like in my case i have 6 of them. try to read the site.
my hardisk size is900,000 gig, actually it is 1 terrabite HD, myinstalled ram is 4 gig, so i put 3096 gig for ram, my max object size is 204000, still somtimes people update form internet not from cache, ie antivirus and some other programs.

WSUS is the fella you're after.
Failing that, Heise's offline update is a champ, I use it extensively and it never misses a beat.
If you're managing more than a handful of machines then you really need to consider WSUS and/or a controlled approach to updates anyway. Allowing random users to install the latest and greatest update at their own whim will introduce you to a whole new world of pain.
