I've had pfsense running nicely for months now.  I have traffic shaping set up and it's worked perfectly until recently.

what makes no real sense is that i didn't change anything on the router, i changed a computer.

I have a home media server that functions as a torrent server.  I used to run linux on it with mdadm raid5 but due to ZFS being added to freebsd and some money to throw at a server upgrade i decided to change that server to freebsd 7.2 amd 64.

My setup is prety basic, cable modem => pfsense =>Lan + Wifi    nothing fancy, traffic shaping has been working fine.

      Heres what's odd
now that i've changed to freebsd on this SERVER all of the sudden when i start any torrents at all the entire network slows to a crawl.  I've tried fresh installs, downgrading to 1.2.1 (was using 1.2.3)  and 1.2.2  I've tried with and without shaping….it doesn't seem to matter, with as few as 20 connections to a torrent it slows to a crawl and i can't figure out why...it honestly doesn't make SENSE.  Why would changing the software on my server make my whole network suck?  the worst part is i couldn't go back to my old setup now without spending a LOT more money to buy new hard drives to back up the data because ZFS doesn't let you shrink.

      any ideas would be helpful

The server changeout is probably a red herring.  What does your bandwidth utilization look like?  Are you finding that you are hitting the upload limit of your pipe?  If so, that will cause the issue.

that's the thing, i'm not even able to download one or two things
as soon as i try, it lags out to the nth degree.
i'm going to run some tests and see what i can come up with….one thing is for sure though, the server itself is MUCH faster.  The response time for adding torrents and stopping them is faster but it's almost like as soon as i start running a torrent it craps out the whole network...which doesn't make sense because the traffic shaping SEEMS to be working.
I'm seeing the proper drops and what not.

I recently was told (I have not confirmed this myself however) that some ISPs are throttling customers' entire connections if they begin to torrent or run other p2p applications.  This may be the case for you.

i guess this is possible but it is kind of a strange coincidence that everything worked until i did this change out.

ok, i've been doing some different stuff to try to figure this issue out…first let me go over my setup

I have a cable modem that goes into a pfsense router.  The pfsense router has 3 interfaces in use, the WAN from the cable modem, the lan to a 16 port gigabit switch and an atheros wifi card.

WAN is DHCP, lan is 192.168.1.0/24  WIFI is 192.168.2.0/24
                y
I'm running DHCP on both LAN and WIFI and have some "static dhcp" rules set up.  My media server is on the LAN and i use normal NAT port forwarding to run a webserver on it for torrentflux.

The trouble started when i switched this server from linux to freebsd, i am not sure if that is the REASON or if something else happened around the same time to cause this problem, but prior to this it worked fine.  I use the server to run torrentflux-b4rt and hold all my media files to share with htpcs on my LAN.

It seems that if i run torrents AT ALL now i get massive lag, i've noticed that it doesn't seem to slow the top SPEED down, just the latency.  basically, if i run a speedtest i notice my ping go from 24-50 ms to over 1000.

I am not sure exactly what is causing this...but it's really annoying.  and here is what is weird, it seems to be related to number of connections....torrents from private trackers that only make 1-2 connections don't seem to cause that much of a problem but public tracker torrents do.

Even more strange, i thought i'd try to set up NFS and run the torrents on another machine to see what happens....what i've noticed is, if i run them on the LAN i get the same issue, lag.

But if i run them on a wifi computer, it works fine.....does this mean my switch is going bad or perhaps i have a bad connection somewhere? I'm really at a loss...
                any help would be appreciated...

This issue has been solved.  I'm not sure exactly what was wrong, after spending so much time thinking it was the software i decided to take my entire network apart and put it back together.

After doing this and a fresh install, and setting everything up manually instead of using one of my previus backups, everything works.

I'm still not sure what it was but it's all good now.
