Upgrade from 2.x

I inherited a 6 year old, custom-built box running 2.x and it reports the newest version is 10. When this box is down everything, including phones stops working. Given the number of major updates I'm hesitant to upgrade.
We are also looking at purchasing a device and migrating to it first and then upgrade the custom box to implement failover, which begs the next question. Will version 10 import a backup from version 2?

@cleterodriguez ??? There is no v10. pfSense 2.5.0 was just released a week ago.
